Wheaton headed into this weekend coming off of a 2 game sweep against WIU, looking to bounce back with a win at home against conference rival Northern Illinois University. Unfortunately, they were unable to do that, falling by a score of 8-1. The Thunder were able to contain their first period woes that they’ve dealt with all season, as the first frame ended with Wheaton down only 2-0, well within striking difference. Unfortunately, the wheels came off in the second period, as the Thunder gave up 4 goals, and could only muster one goal for themselves, netted by defenseman Davis Melin. In the final period Wheaton surrendered two more goals, resulting in another disappointing loss. The score could have been much worse, however, had it not been for goalie Ted Townsend. He stood on his head for much of the game, having to stop 34 total shots on the game, many of which came off of excellent opportunities for the Huskies. The problem plaguing the Thunder tonight was an anemic offense. Wheaton could only muster 14 shots on the evening, and their lone goal came on one of four power play opportunities. Wheaton will travel to West Dundee on Saturday night, taking on NIU again. They will look to bounce back on both ends of the ice in order to come away with valuable points to make a chase for a playoff spot.
The Wheaton Hockey team was back in action tonight, playing the second of two games at home against Western Illinois this weekend. The Thunder fought hard all night, but again succumbed to a slow start, going into the locker room after the first period trailing 5-1. Wheaton managed to bring the score to 6-3 during the second period, but some mental errors led to two quick goals in the last two and a half minutes of the period. The Thunder came out in the third with much tighter and error free play, shutting out WIU for the final frame, but were only able to muster one goal in the period. Once the last buzzer rang, the team found themselves on the short end of an 8-4 final score. Although looking at the results it was a disappointing weekend, there were several positives that the team will come away with from the weekend, along with many areas where they know they need to improve upon. With these takeaways, the Thunder will regroup with a week of practices, and will be right back at it again this coming Friday at 8:40, when they will take on Northern Illinois University at Center Ice of DuPage. Following the game, as always, there will be a free fan skate for all who attend the game. Come show your support on the 22nd for the Wheaton Hockey team as they continue to fight for a playoff spot!
The Wheaton Thunder came into tonight with a record of 1 and 7, looking to gain some momentum from a 3 game home stand, and make a push to earn a playoff spot. Unfortunately, they came out with a slow start tonight against Western Illinois, and found themselves down 5-0 halfway through the second period. Moments before giving up the fifth goal, Wheaton caught an unfortunate break, coming in the form of a controversial shot being waived off. Senior Isaac Melin ripped a wrist shot from the top of the face off circle that went off the post. The puck appeared to ring up the post, slide along the cross bar, and briefly sneak into the net before circling back out. However, the referees explained to the Wheaton bench that from their angle it never crossed the goal line. By the time the Thunder realized the shot had been waived off, Western was able to bring the puck the other way, catch the Thunder players off guard, and bury the puck for the 5th time of the night. Wheaton turned their game around after this, but ultimately still fell short, dropping the first game of the weekend by a final score of 10-5. The Thunder now falls to 1 and 8, and will look to capitalize on the momentum they found in the second half of tonight’s game, on Saturday night at 8:00 PM, at the Center Ice of DuPage. Immediately following the second game of the weekend versus WIU there will be an alumni game, so stick around after the game and watch the current team play against former members of the Wheaton Hockey team!
The Wheaton Hockey Club returns to action with a pair of games this weekend, taking on conference opponent, Western Illinois University. The Thunder will look to get their first home victory, and redeem themselves from lopsided losses to WIU from earlier in the season. The first game will be on Friday, at 8:40 PM, followed by a free fan skate. On Saturday game time will be 8:00 PM. Both games will be at the Center Ice of DuPage. Come cheer Wheaton on as they look to improve their record and qualify for the playoffs!
