Disappointing Weekend in Peoria
The Thunder travelled to Peoria this weekend for a pair of games against conference rival, Western Illinois University.
Friday night’s game saw the Thunder overcome two three-goal deficits, including a third period that saw three Wheaton goals, which would tie the game and force overtime. The overtime brought the Thunder’s point streak to three games, but they would not be able to get the second point as Western Illinois would score in the shortened period to finish off the game. The Thunder were largely the better team on the evening, outshooting the Rockies 42-35, but costly mistakes and penalties allowed Western to walk away with the overtime victory. Western Illinois went two for four on their power play opportunities, and their game-winning goal was scored just moments after their final opportunity expired.
Saturday evening’s contest would go scoreless until the third period, where Wheaton forward Spencer Healey would break the tie early in the third. That would be the only Thunder goal on the day, however, and three unanswered goals by Western Illinois would bury Wheaton’s hopes of a weekend split.
This weekend’s pair of games were the last of 2016. They will have roughly six weeks off until their next games on January 20th and 21st, a home and home split series against Western Illinois University. The game on the 20th will be at home for the Thunder, and will take place at Center Ice of DuPage at 8:40 PM.
