Wheaton followed up the 11-2 blowout against Northern Illinois at home with a 7-3 loss on the road versus the Huskies. Although the score was more narrow than last night’s matchup, this game was more firmly in control by the home team than the scoreboard showed. The Thunder were outshot by the Huskies by a tally of 45-14. Sophomore Teddy Townsend, out in Friday night’s game due to injury, did his best in between the pipes to keep Wheaton in the game, but even his 38 saves weren’t enough to earn the goaltender’s team any points out of the matchup.
The one bright spot for Wheaton in an otherwise underwhelming performance was in transfer forward Blake Eitreim’s second game with the Thunder. All three goals for the visiting team were scored by the new forward, and all of them came unassisted. Going forward, the team will look to build upon the new talent they’ve acquired with the hard working lineup they already had in 2016.
Wheaton will next be in action on Friday night, at home, against Western Illinois University. The game will be at 8:40 PM, and will take place at Center Ice of DuPage.
Wheaton started out 2017 with an 11-2 drubbing at the hands of Northern Illinois. The Thunder started off the scoring off of a power play goal from Davis Melin with 4:37 left in the first, but NIU would even the score between time ticked off the clock for the first period. The Huskies would open the scoring in the second. Nathan Davis would level the board less than a minute later, but the second frame ended with the Thunder trailing 5-2, and six more unanswered goals in the third would bring the final tally to 11-2 in favor of the visiting squad.
The Thunder will be in action again tomorrow night against Northern Illinois again. Wheaton will look to repeat the strong start they had from this evening, but maintain that level of play for a full sixty minutes in tomorrow evening’s game.
The Thunder start out the second half of their season with a home and home split series against conference rival Northern Illinois. Tonight’s match-up will be at home at the Center Ice of DuPage with puck drop at 8:40. They will then hit the road to face the Huskies again tomorrow evening. Making his debut for Wheaton in tonight’s matchup will be sophomore transfer Blake Eitreim.
