Through the patient efforts of Coach Kapsalis and General Manager Clarence “C-Train” Edwards, the team was forged into a tightly knit unit that entered the playoffs with the fiery optimism that comes from being the most improved team in the league. Although with evident championship potential, the team was robbed of their prize in a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss to NIU in the semifinals, a loss which they followed with a vengeful 7-1 crushing of Bradley in the third place game. Once again sparked by the fans that every team admits are the best in the league, the Wheaton hockey team skated to exciting third place finishes in both the regular season and playoffs of the Illinois/Wisconsin Collegiate Hockey Association. The team began the season by losing 5 of their first 7 games. But, under the knowledgeable and inspirational guidance of first-year head coach Marc Kapsalis, the team came back after Christmas to win 6 of their last 8, thus finishing the regular season respectably at 8-6-2. On the ice, the team was anchored by the prolific scoring of senior captain Joel Allison and the consistently outstanding goaltending of senior Craig Welch and junior John Plankeel. Allison and Welch join six other key senior players in leaving the intense excitement of Wheaton College Hockey: Browner, Nelson, J.O., Wills, Weasel, and Van Driver-We’ll miss you guys.
