Far back in the annals of Wheaton history lurks an intriguing story; a handful of idealistic young men, sharing a common dream, unite in noble effort.  They endure ridicule, exhaustion, and physical abuse like few today can imagine.  They press on, never disheartened by crushing defeats and humiliations.  Ultimately, they live to see their dream become reality, and their legacy lives on at Wheaton today.  Fifty plus years later, the Wheaton Hockey team continues the work begun by those brave men.  Season after season, through victory and defeat, the team has survived and even thrived in the face of adversity.  For a few Wheaton students, financial, emotional, and academic pressures become secondary each time they lace up their skates and take to the ice.  The team is rich with tradition, passed on each year from experienced upperclassmen to starry-eyed young freshmen.  From midnight practices to meals at Steak n’ Shake, the pomp and ritual of the Wheaton Hockey team are special to all those who wear the jersey.  Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Wheaton Hockey is the Wheaton fans.  Opposing teams enter Wheaton’s home ice arena with fear and trepidation, as hundreds upon hundreds of students jam the wooden bleachers.  While some are content to observe the spectacle in silence, a majority prefer to vocalize their excitement, creating a reverberating roar.  A line of bodies presses against the battered, streaked plexiglas, cheering the Thunder.  Wheaton College Hockey is about developing Christian leaders and expanding Christ’s Kingdom.  This is carried out by the way the team plays the game and its growing ministry off-ice.
